Researchers at the Munster Technological University (MTU) and Blackrock Castle Observatory are now seeking participants for an upcoming longitudinal study which aims to investigate the long-term effects of head-worn Augmented Reality (AR) displays on drone piloting performance.

Commencing in October 2022, this study is of significant interest to the human spaceflight community as it seeks to quantify which types of head-worn displays would be of most benefit to astronauts on future missions to the surface of the Moon and Mars when flying drones to survey their surroundings for areas of scientific interest.

In order to participate in this study, you must meet the following criteria:

• You must be a current student or staff member at Munster Technological University.

• You must be available to participate in 3 IN-PERSON SESSIONS AT MTU CORK CAMPUS OVER 180 DAYS (see the When You Will Be Required, And For How Long? section below for more information the exact timings).

• A masters degree/PhD in a STEM field is preferred, but not necessary to participate.

By participating in this study:

• You will receive a monetary payment of €15 for every hour of in-person involvement (Total hours for participating in entire study = 4).

• The two highest-performing participants with the best test scores will each receive a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone worth €850.

• You will earn the European Union Open A1/A3 Category drone operator license FREE OF CHARGE issued by the Directorate of Civil Aviation in Luxembourg. This license will allow you to fly drones in adherence with EU Regulation 2019/947 in Ireland, or any other EU Member State.

When Will You Be Required, And For How Long?

Participants must be available to participate in FOUR sessions over the course of 180 days as outlined:

• Operator Registration (October 2022) - Time Requirement: 2 hours (Online training and multiple choice exam - can be performed anywhere, anytime prior to experiment)

• Test Session 1 (October 2022) - Time requirement: 60 minutes

• Test Session 2 (October 2022 - 10 days after Test Session 1) - Time requirement: 30 minutes

• Test Session 3 (April 2023 – 180 days after Test Session 1) - Time requirement: 30 minutes
