Swapping the Photo Bib for the Caddie Bib for 'A Course Called Ireland'

Most of the golf stories I share here involve writing about capturing photos using a camera wrapped around my neck. This one involves a golf bag over my shoulder instead, albeit, still not playing the game itself.

In September 2025, I had the pleasure of caddying for Chris O’Dowd at Cork Golf Club as he played alongside Bill Murray and renowned writerTom Coyne during filming for the newly released six-part documentary series, A Course Called Ireland.

It was a different way to be involved in telling a golf story, and a day we won’t forget at Cork Golf Club for a long time.

I’ve been a member of Cork since 2010 and have been caddying there for almost as long. The club has been part of my life for years, so having the opportunity to help show it off to Bill, Chris and Tom made the occasion particularly special.

When you spend so much time somewhere, it becomes familiar. Welcoming visitors gives you a chance to appreciate it through their eyes, and the guys absolutely loved their time in Little Island. It was a privilege to be part of their day and to share a place that means so much to me.

The series follows Bill Murray and Tom Coyne on a golfing journey around Ireland and Northern Ireland, with friends joining them along the way. Golf provides the starting point, but the people and places they encounter are just as much a part of the story.

For me, that makes our day at Cork a lovely fit. My involvement in golf isn’t only about photographing tournaments or following visiting groups with a camera. It’s also about being a member, caddying, and spending time at a club I’ve known for more than fifteen years.

On this occasion, I was there as Chris’s caddie, not as the photographer. It deserves a place on the blog all the same.

A great day with Bill, Chris and Tom, and a very special memory from Cork Golf Club.

A Course Called Ireland is now available on BBC iPlayer. You can find more information about the six-part series in the BBC announcement below.
