Distorted by atmospheric refraction, the full Moon rises over Hook Head Lighthouse in County Wexford - the oldest operational lighthouse in the world - in this image captured from Dunmore East, County Waterford, in May 2021.
This particular full Moon - also known as the ‘Flower Moon’ due to the abundance of springtime flowers in the Northern Hemisphere - was also a Supermoon, appearing bigger and brighter in the sky as a result of being slightly closer to Earth than normal. A lunar eclipse was also visible to skywatchers in east Asia and Australia, New Zealand, and the Americas.
