Located just a few hundred meters off the Knockadoon Peninsula in east Cork, Capel Island bathed in sunshine in this image captured by drone in May 2021.
Construction of a lighthouse on Capel Island was well underway following a petition by the Cork Steam Ship Company in the 1840s to build a light on Capel to “avert the frequency of wrecks along the unlit coast between Old Head Kinsale and Hook Head” - but it was later abandoned in favour of Ballycotton Island following the sinking of the Sirius in 1847.
